Bradford City 3 v 1 Aston Villa (Capital One Cup – Semi Final 1st Leg)
Bradford City shock premier league Aston Villa under the lights of Valley Parade, as the NPower League Division Two side took the Capital Cup Semi-Final first leg 3-1.
A full house at the Coral Windows Stadium watched Bradford defend well and then take the fight to Aston Villa’s big names. Players such as Shay Given, Darren Bent, Gabriel Agbonlahor, Charles N’Zogbia and Christian Benteke were made to look ordinary.
Bradford played the ball around the field before taking their chances with some fine finishing in open play and from set pieces.
A first half goal from Bradford’s Nahki Wells on the 19th minute set the tone for the game which saw Aston Villa create a number of chances which they could not finish. On this showing Aston Villa should prepare for life in the NPower Championship next season.
The second half went in much the same way, Bradford defending well and having to take a lot of pressure from the Aston Villa front line of Benteke and Agbonlahor before Bradford increased their lead on the 77 minute through a Rory McArdle header.
Aston Villa then brought on Darren Bent who failed to make a difference and he left the field injured (or not up for the fight) before Andreas Weimann pulled one back for Villa in the 82nd minute to make the score 2-1 to Bradford.
This seemed to bring Bradford forward more and instead of defending a 2-1 lead they won a corner in the 87th Minute which was headed home by unmarked Carl McHugh to give Bradford a 3-1 lead to take to Villa park on the 22nd January 2013.
Although the job is only half done, the Bradford City fans who were excellent on the night must be dreaming of a place in the Capital One Cup Final at Wembley and a showdown with Chelsea’s multi-million pound squad. Not forgetting a place in next season’s European Cup.
