Bradford City v Sunderland

Bradford City 1 v 1 Sunderland (Development Squad Match)

Bradford City entertained Kevin Ball’s Premier League side Sunderland, in a behind-closed-doors development friendly game at a sunny Coral Windows Stadium this afternoon.  The Bantams started the game with seven first team squad members including, Arron Jameson, Louie Swain, Matthew Dolan, Kyle Bennett, Chris Atkinson, Mark Yeates and Andy Gray.

Kevin Ball’s side opened the scoring after 20 minutes when Louis Laing drove forward with purpose through the heart of City’s defence before drilling home into the corner with a powerful shot from just inside the box.

Sunderland whose side was made up mainly of youth and development squad players, had the better of the first half controlling the ball with some neat passing from the back through midfield, however they failed to take advantage of their possession with very few opportunities at the Bradford goal.

Bradford’s main effort at goal in the first half came from Kyel Bennett, following an excellent run through the Sunderland midfield Bennett unlashed a shot from 25 yards which struck the hand of a Sunderland player in the area, but the referee waved play-on despite the Bradford shouts for a penalty.

City responded after the interval, with Kyel Bennett hitting the crossbar with a curling effort from the edge of the area early in the second half.

Andy Gray was then denied from point blank range just two minutes later after his header from a Kyel Bennett cross was repelled by a stunning reaction stop from close range by Black Cats ‘keeper Joel Dixon.

Bradford drew level after another driving run from Kyel Bennett, his right wing cross was headed home by a waiting Ollie McBurnie, who powered a header past Dixon at his near post.

Aaron Jameson was substituted on eighty-five minutes to give apprentice goalkeeper Jack Bentley a taste of first team action.  The young shot-stopper made a couple of excellent saves, despite only being on the field for just over five minutes.
