Bradford Park Avenue v Doncaster Rovers

Bradford Park Avenue 0 v 2 Doncaster Rovers (Pre-Season Friendly)

Two second-half goals from Doncaster Rovers sealed victory against Conference North outfit Bradford (Park Avenue) in a pre-season friendly.

Rovers broke the deadlock as striker Theo Robinson fired a powerful right-footed effort into the bottom corner from 20 yards. Shortly after, a cross from midfielder Dean Furman was converted home by Avenue defender Grant Black from close range.

On a sun-drenched evening at the Horsfall Stadium, both teams were playing in their first pre-season friendly of the 2014/15 season.

John Deacey and Paul Dickov experimented with two different teams for each half, allowing their players and trialists at least 45 minutes of match fitness.

In a tight first-half, the Avenue had decent opportunities to take the lead. Danny Frost had the first chance, but his right-footed shot was easily saved by Rovers goalkeeper Jon Maxted from 20 yards.

At the opposite end, Rovers were denied by a fine save from Tom Morgan. After picking up possession, Peter Clarke fired a left-footed strike from 25 yards, but Morgan tipped the ball wide. From the resulting corner, Paul Keegan delivered a teasing cross, but it evaded everyone, trickling wide for an Avenue goal kick.

Before the break, the home side threatened, but efforts from defender Sam Hewitt and new signing Joe Colbeck failed to find the back of the net.

With two new teams on the pitch for the second-half, the League One side showed their quality.

Paul Dickov’s men started to dominate and were unlucky not to score the first goal as James Coppinger was unable to keep his shot down from 14 yards, and a header from Ben Askins flew over after meeting a corner from Theo Robinson.

Then, Rovers broke the deadlock. On the turn, Robinson took one touch before firing a low right-footed effort, and despite getting a fingertip to the shot, goalkeeper Brad Dixon was unable to stop the ball finding the bottom corner from 20 yards.

Ten minutes later, an own goal from the Avenue extended the visitors lead. A fine run from Furman down the right flank, allowed the midfielder to cross the ball, and Black’s sliced clearance flew into the top corner from close range.

The away side nearly added a third goal. A neat one-two between Scott Brown and Elliot Kebbie created an opportunity for the winger, but his low shot was saved by Dixon from ten yards.

With the full-time whistle approaching, Rovers had another opportunity to score. But, after a run and cross from Furman, the unmarked Kebbie failed to hit the target from three yards.
