Wayne Rooney Leading England Goalscorer
Wayne Rooney went into this evenings game with San Marino needing just one goal to become the joint leading goalscorer for his country, a long side legend Bobby Charlton.
It took the England captain just twelve minutes to equal Charlton’s record, when he scored from the penalty spot to give England the lead and Rooney the goalscoring record.
Manager Roy Hodgson substituted Rooney around the hour mark to avoid any injuries to key plays on a poor pitch, however Rooney looked very disappointed as he left the field still looking for goal number fifty.
Rooney who made his England debut at the age of just seventeen now heads the list of all time England goalscorers. A list that includes such names as Bobby Charlton, Geoff Hurst, Jimmy Greaves, Gary Lineker, Michael Owen, Alan Shearer, Tom Finney, Frank Lampard, and Nat Lofthouse.
