Burnley Chasing Euro Hero Michael McGovern
Northern Ireland’s Euro 2016 hero Michael McGovern is a target for Burnley after the Premier League newcomers turned their attention away from Charlton’s Nick Pope. The Clarets saw a bid in excess of £1million for Pope turned down by the League One side for the goalkeeper this week.
Burnley were also interested in Daniel Bentley before he joined Brentford this week, however they have switched their gaze to Michael McGovern who is available on a free transfer.
McGovern was sensational for Northern Ireland during the European Championship, earning rave reviews from across the continent, particularly after his performance against Germany. McGovern made a number of top saves, restricting the world champions to one goal.
Speaking about McGovern performances Republic of Ireland manager Michael O’Neill said, “What can you say about him, the players gave him a round of applause when he came into the dressing room. When you get that, you don’t really need the manager to say anything more, it was a phenomenal performance.”
McGovern left Hamilton Academical at the end of last season and is biding his time before agreeing terms elsewhere. Whether he would relish the prospect of playing understudy to England stopper Tom Heaton is questionable.
