City Sign Former Premier League Defender
Bradford City have this morning confirmed the signing of former Premier League defender Matthew Kilgallon from Blackburn Rovers on a free transfer. Kilgallon has signed a one year contract which includes an option for a further year.
Kilgallon, who passed a medical at Apperley Bridge training centre on Saturday morning, becomes the club’s eighth signing of the summer. The centre half, who can also play as a full back, took part in training this morning with his new team mates.
He is a very experienced player having previously featured in the Premier League for Leeds United, Sheffield United and Sunderland. Whilst last season he made eleven appearances for Blackburn Rovers in the Championship.
Speaking about the new signing City manager Stuart McCall siad, “We’re delighted to have brought in someone of Matt’s pedigree and experience. I’ve spoken to a number of people at Blackburn Rovers and they were all very positive about him.
Matthew is coming here hungry and desperate to play at the highest level possible and he feels that coming to Bradford will give him the opportunity to play higher up the leagues again. I obviously know Matt from his days at Sheffield United and Greg Abbott knows him from his time at Leeds United.
We still needed to add to our defensive options for the new season having already lost Christopher Routis, Greg Leigh and Reece Burke from last year, whilst also having Rory McArdle and Stephen Darby out injured. Matt ticks a lot of boxes and we now have that competition for places both at centre back and left back.”
Born in York, Matt Kilgallon started his career in the Leeds United Youth team before playing for the Whites in the Premier League, Championship and of course in Europe.
The 6′ 2” defender then joined Sheffield United signing for £1.75 million, were he won the 2008-09 season Player of the Year award, before securing a move to Sunderland. Whilst at the Stadium of Light, Kilgallon also played for Middlesbrough & Doncaster on loan.
After three years with Sunderland, Kilgallon signed for Blackburn Rovers in 2015 were he made 11 appearances last season before being released in the summer. Kilgallon has also been capped by England U21 five times.
