Padiham FC 1 v 0 Team Northumbria (FA Cup Extra Preliminary Round)
The first official game of the new 2016-17 season saw the return of the worlds greatest cup competition, as the magic of the FA Cup arrived at the Arbories, were Padiham entertained Team Northumbria.
In a fairly even first half, it was Padiham that had the first effort at goal following an excellent corner which was met by club captain Martin Parkes on the six yard box, but his flicked header went just wide of Mundy’s far post and out for a goal kick.
Shortly afterwards, following an excellent run by Jordon Armstrong down the right-wing the ball found its way to the edge of the Team Northumbria area, were Cookson hit a shot with the outside of his right-foot, which had Mundy in the Team Northumbria goal at full stretch to turn the ball around the post.
Midway through the half the referee had a difficult decisions to make when Alex Murphy outpaced the Team Northumbria left-back before cutting inside the penalty area, only to be foul and pulled back however the referee incorrectly waved away the penalty appeals.
Padiham continued to have slighty more possession as the half went on but they didn’t find the net or create any further clear-cut chances. The Storks defence were solid and limited the visitors to a couple of long range efforts that didn’t trouble Michael Donlon and lead to a half time score of 0-0.
Steve Wilkes must have delivered an excellent half time team talk as the home side started the stronger of the two sides, Padiham controlled the tempo with some excellent passing as Northumbria struggled to get hold of the ball and get out of their own half.
On fifty-one minutes, Padiham took the lead as Alex Murphy collected the ball around the halfway line before moving into the Team Northumbria half and hitting a shot from about thirty-five yards into the top corner, which left Mundy no chance in the Northumbria goal and made the score 1-0.
Padiham continued to control the game until around eighty minutes when the referee awarded a penalty to Team Northumbria following a foul by Jordan Armstrong. This was his second error of the game and later the referee could be heard say his apologies to Armstrong for wrongly awarding the spot kick.
Lucky for the referee, Michael Donlon made an outstanding save diving to his right and smothering the ball to keep Padiham a goal to the good. The decision changed the game slightly in the final five minutes as Northumbria pressed for an equaliser, but the Padiham back four and goalkeeper stayed strong to make the final score 1-0.
The Storks will now welcome another team from the north-east to the Arbories Memorial Sports Ground, when Newcastle Benfield visit the YESSS Electrical Arena for the FA Cup First Qualifying Round on the 20th August 2016.
