Steeton AFC 1 v 3 Thackley (Pre-Season Friendly)
Thackley Football Club arrived at Summerhill Lane with manager Chris Reape looking to test his squad in the final pre-season game before they play their first competitive match of the season in the FA Cup Qualifying Round against Harrogate Railway this weekend.
As Yorkshire Day drew to a close, it was the visitors who started the stronger of the two sides, taking the lead in the first minute. Thackley were awarded a penalty for a trip in the area during their first attack of the game. Luke Robinson scored from the rebound after the Steeton goalkeeper Wayne Mahomet saved the initial spot kick.
Despite this being a pre-season friendly both sides were fully committed to what was an entertaining match with chances at both ends. There were of course a couple of poorly timed challenges during the game as players look to regain their match fitness.
Steeton had a couple of half chances during the first half, the first was a header from the edge of the box by Ben Clarkson who did well to direct the ball towards goal following a long cross field pass from the halfway line. The second fell to Graham Holmes who struck a volley from the edge of the area that went over the Thackley crossbar.
The visitors also created two excellent chances and should have increased their lead, the first fell to Dan Broadbent who’s shot from just inside the Steeton area forced goalkeeper Wayne Mahomet into a world class one handed save fifiteen minutes into the half. The second was a free header from a corner which Mahomet tipped over the crossbar.
At the start of the second half Thackley should have extended their lead when George Eustance outpaced two Steeton defenders only to see his shot beat goalkeeper Mahomet and rebounded off the post. Eustance collected the rebound six yards from goal only to put his second attempt wide of the empty goal.
However a second goal did arrive on sixty-eight minutes, when Dan Broadbent turned the ball into the Steeton goal from close range to give Thackley a 2-0 lead.
Steeton hit back on seventy-four minutes as Andy Holden scored from the penalty spot to make it 1-2, after Thackley defender Kris Hargreaves was adjudged to have pulled the shirt of a Steeton forward in the area.
After a number of changes, Thackley extended their lead with ten minutes to go when Dan Broadbent added his second and Thackley’s third of the game to make the full-time score 1-3 to Thackley.
This weekend will see both sides in action as Steeton AFC travel to Colne Football Club for their final pre-season game, before the West Riding County Amateur Football League begins on the 12th August. Whilst Thackley will entertain Harrogate Railway at home in the FA Cup 1st Qualifying Round.
