Bayern Munich Pushing For European Football League

According to an explosive reports in German publication Der Spiegel, a coalition dubbed the “Big Seven” has spent months secretly working on a proposal to create a new private European football league, which has been done without including the respective national associations and other teams.

The report claims Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, Barcelona, Juventus, AC Milan, Arsenal and Manchester United have been involved in these secret meetings and according to the documents, such a league would operate over thirty-four weeks with fixtures scheduled to be played on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. The concept of a European League has been discussed for years with rumours it could replace the UEFA Champions League.

Bayern Munich CEO Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, who was the head of the European Club Association (ECA) is trying to push for a new league. The club has been dominant in the Bundesliga having won the last six league titles. But their monopoly in a weaker league has affected their chances of competing in the Champions League as a result and they haven’t reached the final since 2013.

The formation of the new league has so far failed due to a number of legal issues, whilst UEFA had attempted to quell the uprising by agreeing to reform the Champions League by 2021 (to coincide with the new rights period) to favour top clubs. In all Eleven clubs will be founder members of the new European Super League including Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Arsenal, Manchester United, Chelsea, Manchester City, Liverpool, PSG, Juventus and AC Milan.

A further five “guest clubs” would take part in the new European Super League including Atletico Madrid, Borussia Dortmund, Inter Milan, AS Roma and Marseille, with the new competition not seeing any relegation for a guaranteed period of twenty years.  The report suggests that a decision on the new league will be taken in November 2018 as the clubs are still in talks with UEFA,  however if the European Super League is formed the Champions League will not exist in its current format after 2021.
