Clarets to Sign Stoke City Dutch International

Erik Pieters to Join Clarets

Burnley are set to make their first signing of the summers with Stoke City’s Netherlands international left back Erik Pieters. The defender is out of favour at the Bet365 Stadium having ended the season on loan in France with Amiens.

Capped eighteen times for his country and part of the UEFA U21 European Championship winning Dutch side in 2007, Pieters started his career with FC Utrecht before joining PSV Eindhoven for €2.5m in 2008, where he played Champions and Europa League football.

He joined Stoke City for £3m in 2013 forming a formidable partnership down the left with Marko Arnautovic. However he was part of the Potters side relegated from the Premier League in 2018, he found himself sidelined under Gary Rowett and Nathan Jones last season, before being shipped out on loan in January.

Pieters would provide competition for Charlie Taylor at left back and replace Stephen Ward, who recently joined Stoke City after leaving Turf Moor at the end of his contract.

But now he will move away permanently from the bet365 Stadium as Sean Dyche looks to bolster his defensive department ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League campaign.

Burnley leaked 68 goals in the Premier League last term, with only four teams recording a worse defensive record. Pieters will provide competition at left-back for Charlie Taylor next season as Burnley look to improve on their 15th-place finish from last season.
