Lancaster City 2 v 2 Hyde United (Bet Victor Northern Premier League)

Following last weekends win on the road at South Shields the Dolly Blues had the chance to go top of the Bet Victor Northern Premier League with a victory at the Giant Axe against Hyde United. Lancaster City like all football clubs across the country paid their respects to the service men and women who lost their lives whilst fighting for their county with the playing of the “Last Post” and a minutes silence.

Lancaster City started the stronger of the two sides and were on top for the opening ten minutes of the match, the first effort of the half fell to the home side on two minutes when Paul Dawson shot from the edge of the area went just over Luke Mewitt’s crossbar.

Hyde United started to get back into the game with some excellent runs by Dan Turner which were causing the home side a few issue, on twelve minutes a great bit of defending from Ben Hudson denied Turner a goal scoring opportunity. From the resulting corner Tongue and Turner linked up well, but Jordan Fagbola’s header was cleared by Ashton.

On seventeen minutes, the Dolly Blues were awarded a free-kick at the edge of the visitors area following an excellent run by Paul Dawson who beat three defenders before being brought down. Rob Wilson took the resulting free-kick which was saved by Luke Mewitt.

Four minutes later, referee Stuart Morland issued the first booking of the game as Kyle Brownhill was booked for a foul on Sam Bailey just outside the visitors area, the resulting free-kick from Rob Wilson tested Mewitt who tipped the ball around the post for a corner.

On thirty-two minutes, the home side took the lead following a long ball from the halfway line by Lewis Fensome. The ball was flicked on by Matty Blinkhorn at the edge of the area and after being missed by the Hyde defence fell to David Norris, who controlled the ball inside the box before slotting the ball under Mewitt to make it 1-0.

The home side should have extended their lead with five minutes left in the half, as David Norris found himself unmarked at the back post just six yards out. However Luke Mewitt in the visitors goal pulled off a world class save deny the City striker.

Lancaster City started the second-half looking to extend their lead and on fifty minutes had a great chance, as David Norris found himself free inside the box on the right-hand side of the area only to see him drag his shot wide of the far post.

Just five minutes later and the home side should have added a second following another excellent chance, when Lewis Fensome take a long range shot which the Hyde United keeper Luke Mewitt managed to palms away for a corner.

The visitors then had a great chance to draw level when the ball sat up for Liam Tongue, which forced Sam Ashton into a fantastic acrobatic save to stop the ball from finding the top corner of the goal.

City then had yet another chance to extend their lead on fifty-sox minutes and again the ball fell to David Norris just inside the visitors area on the right side. However Norris again dragged his shot passed Mewitt and wide of the far post.

Hyde United drew level on fifty-seven minutes following a long throw which was flicked on by Chris Sharp, the ball fell to Dan Turner who poked home at the near post giving Ashton no chance to make the score 1-1.

The home side took the lead on eighty-three minutes following a deep corner which was headed towards goal by Lewis Fensome before hitting the visiting keeper Luke Mewitt on the chest and going into the goal to make the score 2-1.

As the game entered three minutes of injury time it looked like the Dolly Blues were heading for the top of the Northern Premier League. Then with just moments left the ball found its way to Liam Tongue who drilled the ball into the bottom corner of the goal, passed the diving Sam Ashton to make the full-time score 2-2.
