North Ribblesdale 24 v 17 Old Rishworthians (Yorkshire League Two)
Yorkshire League Two high flyers Old Rishworthians arrived at Grove Park this weekend as they looked to avoid a third league defeat in a row, again the weather played a massive part in the game as it did on the previous home fixture. Storm Dennis arrived just before kick-off bringing strong winds and heavy rain that made playing conditions atrocious.
The visitors started the game well and opened the scoring in the first few minutes as they latched on to an early mistake by North Ribblesdale. Phil Kershaw collected the ball for the visitors and ran half of the pitch before going over for the try to put the visitors into a 0-5 lead, however they failed to add to the score as Joe Billing missed the conversion.
North Ribblesdale played with the conditions winning the scrums and running with the ball, which soon put the visitors under pressure, this lead to a scrum tem metres out and then a foul which stopped the home side from scoring. The referee awarded a penalty try before Michael Thwaite scored the conversion to give the home side a 7-5 lead.
The visitors seamed to be spurred on by the referees decision and moments later scored with the best move of the match. It came from a lineout with the ball going along the line to left wing Anthony Shoesmith, who rounded his man and broke through a tackle before making a forty metre run to score a try in the corner to make it 7-10.
Indiscipline again cost the visitors, as North Ribblesdale levelled the scores with a penalty in the front of the posts for yet again another foul which earned a yellow card for hooker Toby Muscat-Baron. Michael Thwaite again stepped up to score the penalty and bring the score level at 10-10.
North Ribblesdale took the lead as half-time approached with a second penalty try, which was awarded at a scrum to give the home side a 15-10 lead. Michael Thwaite’s trusted right foot added the conversion to give the home side a 17-10 half-time lead.
Old Rishworthians started the second-half stronger of the two sides and captain Callum Heseltine gathered an awkwardly bouncing ball to set up a ruck. The ball fell to Number eight Jacob Bower who set off on a solo effort from in his own half, in a sixty metre dash through the centre of the pitch to score under the posts and make the score 17-15. Billing then added the conversion to level the score at 17-17.
Midway through the half the pitch really started to cut up and North Ribblesdale started to take control of the match with some excellent rolling maul’s which were a real threat to the visitors. This again lead to another scrum and more indiscipline from the visitors which left the referee no choice but to award a third penalty try making the score 22-17. Another conversion from Michael Thwaite increased the score to 24-17.
The visitors had more of the ball in the final ten minutes as they battled to get back into the match. However, the home side produced some outstanding disciplined defending which kept the visitors out leaving the full-time score 24-17 to North Ribblesdale.
North Ribblesdale will travel to Mallorie Park Drive next saturday to take on another team at the top of the Yorkshire League Two table in Ripon RFU, as they look to extend their winning win.
