Kirby Lonsdale 12 v 21 Billingham (Northern Premier League)
Kirby Lonsdale returned to Underley Park for a Northern Premier League fixture against high flying Billingham, who had travelled across the A66 despite the strong wind and poor weather conditions from storm Jorge. Scott Armstrong’s side were looking to make it two consecutive victories following his sides 7-15 win on the Wirral two weeks ago.
The visitors won the reverse fixture 57-0 last October and the home side were looking to take revenge on the visitors, Scott Armstrong’s team started the stronger of the two sides and took the lead in the opening few minutes going over the line for the try before Fearon made the conversion to give Kirby Lonsdale a 7-0 lead.
Just five minutes later, an excedllent move by the visitors so Matt Kirby collect the ball and break through the Kirby Lonsdale line before running thrity-five yards to grab a try and make the score 7-5. However Peter Evans failed to make a very difficult conversion from the twenty-two line.
Billingham were reduced to fourteen men midway through the half, when Nathan Myers received a yellow card and was sent to the sin bin for ten minutes. Kirby Lonsdale tried to take advantage of the extra man and ran with the ball, however despite having most of the possession inside the visitors twenty-two they failed to add to the scoreline.
The visitors went in front just before half-time as captain Peter Evans broke clean through the Kirby Lonsdale line before slipping the ball to Anthony Jackson who beat the last man to score a try under the posts to make it 7-10. Evans, stepped up to score the conversion to give the visitors a 7-12 half-time lead.
Scott Armstrong must have given a strong team talk at half-time as Kirby Lonsdale were on top straight from the kick-off. The home side got themselves leave scoring early in the second-half as Allwood got free down the right-hand wing to outpace the last man before going over for the try to make the score 12-12.
Billingham then took charge of the match and the final thirty minutes so them play some exemplary rugby with captain Peter Evans lead from the front. Evans, scored a penalty to give the visitors a 12-15 lead. The visitors indiscipline showed again midway through the second-half when a second player received a yellow card and ten minutes in the sin bin.
Peter Evans lead his side in the final ten minutes of the match adding a further drop goal and another penalty in a Man of the Match performance which added a further six points to the scoreline, leaving the full-time score 12-21.
Scott Armstrong’s squad will look to bounce back next weekend when Kirby Lonsdale travel to Sandal in the Northern Premier League, with the club now sitting in eighth in the league table they are in danger of pulled into the relegation fight.
