Hellifield Sports 9 v 2 Sutton Reserves (Craven & District League Division 3)
Hellifield Sports Football Club were back in Craven & District Football League action this weekend, as Sutton Reserves visited the Hellifield Recreation ground for the second home league fixture of the season. Around fifty supporters turned out to watch the game, which had a real community feel on the touchline.
Hellifield Sports started the stronger of the two side and put the visitors under pressure straight from the kick-off. However, it was the visitors who took the lead in the opening five minutes, when referee Mark Wormald awarded the visitors a spot-kick. Rob Golsby slotted the ball into the bottom corner of the goal passed Ward to make it 0-1.
It didnt talk long for the home side to equilise following a long ball down the left-wing found a Hellifield Sports player, who cut inside the defender and then slotted the ball under the advancing goalkeeper Aldham into the empty goal to make the score 1-1.
On ten minutes, the home side took the lead as Will Beresford broke through the middle of the defence with the ball, he drove into the area before firing the ball passed Aldham into the roof of the net from an angle to make it 2-1.
After a scrappy period of play the home side then extended their lead as the ball was delivered to the far post from a free-kick. Will Beresford sent the ball across the six yard box and Robert Hayes was first to react slotting the ball under Aldham in the Sutton goal to make it 3-1.
Just after the half an hour mark, Will Beresford added his second and Hellifield Sports fourth goal of the afternoon. After some poor marked allowed the centre-forward was allowed a clear shot at goal from the edge of the box to make it 4-1.
However, the visitors had not given up despite being out played by the home side for most of the first-half. Sutton Reserves managed a rare run into the Hellifield box and following a misunderstanding the ball fell to Joshua Green ten yards out and he sent a shot across the goalkeeper Ward to make the half-time score 5-2.
It was more of the same in the second half as the home side continued to win the midfield battle, Man of the Match Robert Hayes impressed in the middle of the pitch breaking up play and making a number of excellent runs. He controlled the game for large periods of the second-half creating a number of chances for the home side with some great passing.
Around the half mark, the home side were awarded a spot-kick following a very poor challenge just inside the Sutton box. However the home side failed to take advantage and the penalty which was well struck sent the goalkeeper the wrong way but hit the bottom of the post and was cleared to safety.
Will Beresford, who finished the game with five goals, saved his best goal of the afternoon until last. As the striker collected the ball on the edge of the area following a great through ball he rounded the last defender and goalkeeper before putting the ball into the net with a rabona finish.
Hellifield Sports went on to add two more goals in the final fifiteen minutes of the match, it was an outstanding performance by Paul Dawson’s side to be honest it could and should have finished in double figures. However the match finished with the full-time score 9-2.
After the match this afternoon, Hellifield Sports sit on top of the Craven & District League Third Division with maximum points from their opening two games. Cowling Reserves will visit the Hellifield Recreation ground next Saturday for what looks like a tough match after Cowling Reserves won their opening fixture 5-2 against Cononley Sports.
Speaking after the match Hellifield Sports manager Paul Dawson said, I am really over the moon with the result today, mainly because we followed up the result against Settle United on Wednesday with another victory. What is exciting for me is after a 9-2 win, I think we can still play better. We missed alot of chances again today and we were a little bit scrappy at times, but once got the ball on the deck we played some excellent football.
