Former Clarets Director Passes Away

Derek Gill (1933 – 2020)

Burnley Football Club have this afternoon confirmed that former club director Derek Gill has sadly passed away at the age of eighty-seven. Mr Gill, who was an accountant by profession, joined the Board of Directors in the early 1980s and was a member when the club won the 1981/82 Third Division Championship under Brian Miller.

He served the club for several years, looking after the financial side until he resigned his position in 1985, having put himself forward but failing to land the role of Chairman to succeed John Jackson.

When chairman John Jackson stood down in 1985 he was expected to assume the position himself but surprised everyone by resigning his position on the board although a return could have occurred when he led a group looking to take on the now stricken club under the Frank Teasdale administration.

Derek joined the board in the early 1980s having examined the financial mess left by Bob Lord. He was a member of the board during the ill fated John Bond era. Derek was very much a committed Claret while also a devoted family man and our thoughts are today with his family and friends following his passing at the age of 87.
