Jon Flanagran Signs For Begium League A Leaders Royal Charleroi
Former Clarets loanee Jon Flanagan has joined Royal Charleroi Sporting Club who are currently top of the Belgium A League as he attempts to restart his career. The former Liverpool left-back has been without a club since leaving Glasgow Rangers in June, with Steven Gerrard having deemed him surplus to requirements. He’s since been training with Fleetwood Town, who are managed by former Rangers & Burnley player Joey Barton.
Flanagan, who won an England cap against Ecuador under Roy Hodgson in 2014, made only nine appearances in his final three seasons at Anfield and spent time on loan at Burnley and Bolton Wanderers. Having signed for Rangers on a free contract in the summer of 2018, he struggled to hold down a regular place in Gerrard’s side and was selected just nine times in his final season, with only five of those appearances coming in the Scottish Premiership.
Royal Charleroi Sporting Club currently sit one point ahead of Beerschot and Standard Liege, with the latter side having been beaten 2-0 by Rangers in the Europa League last month. Welcoming him to the club, Les Zèbres said: “It looks like we have a new zebra here, the whole Sporting family welcomes Jon to the club.”
