Settle Cricket Club v Morecambe Cricket Club (Pre-Season Friendly)

After a shortened Ribblesdale Cricket League in 2020 due to coronavirus, Champions Settle Cricket Club returned to action yesterday against Lancashire rivals Morecambe Cricket Club at Marshfields in a pre-season friendly match. Despite the match being in early April the pitch was in excellent condition, however the weather changed during the afternoon with long sunny spells, overcast clouds and snow during the final part of match.

Whilst non-elite sporting fixtures around the country have started to return, there are still some government guidelines and laws that are effecting sporting events. For example, the match at Marshfield yesterday followed government guidelines and was played behind closed doors. Whilst Settle’s professional player Ashen Silva was unavailable for selection due to following government laws and self-isolating after flying back from Sri Lanka.

Settle Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat bringing openers Adam Strickland and John Davidson to the crease, the opening partnership lasted five overs with the home side making seventeen runs before Stickland was caught behind by Pearson off the bowling of Backhouse for four runs, bringing Owen West to the crease.

Davidson and West forged an excellent partnership over the next eleven overs but just as the two batsman started to find the gaps and hit some boundaries, West missed timed a shot over the bowlers head and was caught on the boundary by Cassidy off the bowling of Clough for thirteen runs from twenty-two balls.

John Davidson was then joined at the crease by brother Tom Davidson as the opener took control of the innings whilst making some outstanding shots. He then retired after twenty overs making a quick half century off sixty-four balls, which allowed other team members some valuable time at the crease.

Robbie Davidson arrived in the middle with the score at one hundred and twenty-seven for three, he added a further twelve runs before being caught by Heywood off the bowling of Clough. As the home side looked to increase the run rate, Ben Hulse arrived in the middle and alongside Tom Davidson they started to score quickly.

The visitors then took two wickets in two balls as first of all Tom Davidson was caught behind by Pearson off the bowling of Backhouse for twenty-two runs. Will Davidson arrived at the crease and was dismissed for a golden duck after edging the ball into the slips off the bowling Backhouse.

Ryan Sumner, Simon Tarbox, Harry Snowden and Daniel Strickland added a further nineteen runs to the total, with sixteen of those runs going to Snowdon who finished not out alongside Daniel Strickland. Settle finished the innings on one hundred and seventy runs for the lose of nine wickets in the forty overs.

The visitors completed the innings using six bowlers, Louis Backhouse was the best performer with bowling figures of eight overs, two maidens, three wickets for twenty-one runs. Further wickets came from Kieran Moffat (2), Tommy Clough (2), Lewis Smith (1) whilst Jamie Cassidy also completed his eight overs without taking a wicket.

Morecambe Cricket Club were set a target of one hundred and seventy-one runs for victory and they wasted no time as the two opening batsman Jamie Heywood and Luke Pearson both hit the boundary three times in the first few overs. Jamie Heywood was the first to be dismissed after he faced just eight balls, trapped LBW off the bowling of Simon Tarbox for eighteen leaving the visitors thirty-five for one.

Alex Briggs was next to the crease for the visitors and after taking a quick single off the first ball he then lost his wicket off the second ball as Simon Tarbox clean bowled him for one. Reuben Orr then walked to the middle only to be bowled by Tom Davidson for a golden duck making the score thrity-nine for three.

Luke Pearson, who opened the batting for the visitors was next to lose his wicket as he looked to get aboundary on the leg side. But he was caught by Owen West off the bowling of Simon Tarbox for twenty-fours runs off twelve balls. The dismissal came at a bad time as he was building up an excellent partnership with Ryan Pearson.

As the snow started to fall at Marshfield the home side took control of the match taking four quick wickets, the first was Kieran Moffat who was caught by Will Davidson off the bowling of Ben Hulse for one run, the second wicket was that of Lewis Smith who was bowled by Will Davidson again for one run. Whilst Jamie Cassidy was caught by Harry Snowden for two runs and Tommy Clough was also dismissed for two runs leaving the visitors ninety-three for nine.

Ryan Pearson was the last man out for the visitors caught by Ryan Sumner off the bowling of Daniel strickland for thirty-two runs from eighteen balls, which left Morecambe all out for ninty-three given the pre-season victory to Settle Cricket Club by seventy-seven runs.
