Former Clarets Defender Extends Wigan Athletic Contract

Tendayi Darikwa Signs New Contract With Wigan Athletic

Wigan Athletic have this morning confirmed that defender Tendayi Darikwa has signed a new contract with the Club until the summer of 2023. Darikwa made twenty-six league appearances last season for Leam Richardson’s side having joined them in the January transfer window from Sky Bet Championship side Nottingham Forest.

The Zimbabwe international played a pivotal role in helping the Latics survive in Sky Bet League One last season, as the right-sided defender was a mainstay in Latics’ starting eleven in the second half of the 2020-21 league season, playing a crucial role as he helped Leam Richardson’s side heroically survive from relegation against all of the odds.

After making his debut in the 3-3 draw at Rochdale in January, he went on to make a further twenty-five league appearances for Latics, helping the defence provide a solid platform to push towards safety. Darikwa will continue to provide a wealth of experience in the dressing room to his fellow teammates, having played in over 200 league matches, with a good percentage of those coming in the Sky Bet Championship.

The defender who previously worked with manager Leam Richardson at Chesterfield at the start of his career, before moving on to join Premier League Burnley and Nottingham Forest, is delighted to have committed his future to Wigan Athletic.

Speaking about the contract extension Tendayi Darikwa said, “I’m delighted to be back here at the Football Club, I really enjoyed my time during the second half of last season when I joined. We’ve been speaking for a few weeks now and I can’t wait to get going again. I’m grateful to the manager for bringing me in and giving me the opportunity to play football matches. Hopefully, we can be successful together this season.

Leam was probably the main reason (to re-sign). As soon as he signed his deal last season, he outlined his plans for this year and it was something I wanted to be part of. I want to take this Football Club back to where it should be its not that long ago the club was playing in the Premier League & FA Cup Finals it would be great to bring those good times back.
