Thomas Robert May Sign For Clarets After Pre-Season Trial
Burnley Football Club have been looking at winger Thomas Robert the son of former Newcastle United French star Laurent Robert. The winger has been training with the Clarets during pre-season and may join the club’s Under 23 squad after playing for Scottish League One side Airdrie since leaving France last year.
The attacker / winger turned his back on a big money move to French Ligue One side Montpellier a year ago to head to Scottish League One side Airdrie on a one year contract with the Diamonds. He instead that he wanted regular first team exposure and went on to make twenty-six appearances last season, scoring four goals.
Thomas Robert might have had the chance to emulate his dad’s legendary Newcastle career, as The Magpies were among the wingers Premier League admirers after he turn down a new contract so he could move for free in a bid for more first team starts. At the moment there are teams from the Bundesliga, Scottish Premiership as well as French sides Nice and Rennes keen to sign the player.
Laurent Robert, won nine international caps for France and spent five years at both Montpellier and Newcastle United. The former Paris Saint Germain star, now forty-six scored thirty-two goal in one hundred and eighty-one appearances for Newcastle United before leaving to join Benfica in 2006.
Speaking last year prior to his sons move to Airdrie, his agent Mark McKay said: “We have several offers from clubs in France, Germany and the UK but Thomas wants to be playing regular first-team football wherever he ends up going. He his refused Montpellier’s offer of a new deal as he wants to be playing first-team football and he sees that as key to his long term development at this stage of his career.”
