Sean Dyche Interested In Signing Sheffield United Defender
Burnley Football Club are among clubs monitoring developments with Sheffield United defender Chris Basham who is out of contract in the summer. Basham has consistently proved himself one of the best defenders in the top two divisions over recent seasons statistically topping charts for most tackles won and interceptions.
The defender is a huge favourite at Bramall Lane after spending seven years there but, despite talk of a new contract being close to agreement, Sportsmail understands he has still to receive a formal offer and is having to weigh up other options. Wolverhampton Wanderers and his boyhood club Newcastle United showed interest in the summer but were put off by Sheffield United’s valuation. Basham has been happy to stay and has spoken openly about his desire to help the club return to the top flight.
Burnley staff have a long-standing admiration for the centre back, particularly with their own centre-backs James Tarkowski and Ben Mee contracts coming to the end this season. The Clarets recognise he could prove a reliable signing both for the Premier League and the Sky Bet Championship should they be relegated. They want cover and competition for a number of positions but are mindful of their spending with relegation a very real prospect as they sit bottom of the table.
