Burnley Set Sights On Portuguese Defender

Clarets Interested In Portuguese Defender Rafael Ramos

Burnley Football Club have set their sights on signing Portuguese defender Rafael Ramos, in the summer transfer window according to reports in Football Insider. The 27-year-old Santa Clara full-back is regarded as one of the best defenders in the Portuguese top flight and impressed in the recent clash against Braga.

Ramos is in the final year of his contract at Santa Clara and a recruitment source at the club has said that both Burnley and Fulham are weighing up moves for him. Fulham boss Marco Silva is well aware of Ramos due to his Portuguese connections and the player is also interested in a move to Premier League. The former Sporting Lisburn youth player has made thirty appearances across all competitions this season, making four assists.

Former Portugal Under-20 International, Ramos made his breakthrough with Orlando City in Major League Soccer. The right-back made twenty-five appearances during the 2015 campaign – Orlando’s inaugural season in the competition. He then played three times for Chicago Fire before moving to FC Twente in the Dutch second tier. He made twenty-one appearances as they secured the league title in the 2018-19 season.

The defender then secured a return to Portugal to make his first league appearances in the country’s top flight. Ramos has played eighty-two times for Santa Clara since returning to his homeland, registering nine assists.

Fulham look likely to register yet another promotion to the Premier League under Marco Silva, as they are twelve points clear at the top of the Sky Bet Championship. Their current first-choice right-back Neco Williams is on loan from Liverpool in a deal that expires in May 2022. Whilst the Clarets are in relegation danger in the Premier League, sitting just one point from safety with two games in hand on nearest rivals Watford.
