Settle Cricket Club v Barnoldswick Cricket Club (Ribblesdale League 20/20)

Settle Cricket Club returned to action at Marshfield in the Ribblesdale League 20/20 competition yesterday evening, knowing that victory over their visitors Barnoldswick Cricket Club would see them through to the quarter-final stages of the competition. It’s another Friday evening match which meant that Palomino Pizza returned to the stadium giving the fans the chance to purchase some excellent food whilst watching the game.

Barnoldswick Cricket Club won the toss and elected to bat first bringing Adil Khan and Aziz Iqbal to the crease in some decent weather conditions. After facing eleven balls Adil Khan became the first wicket of the match, when he was clean bowled by Eddy Read for just one run leaving the visitors 2-1.

Jonathan Beech was next into bat for the visitors joining Aziz Iqbal at the crease, as the pair started to build a decent partnership adding fifty-six runs to the scoreboard before Beech was dismissed stumped by Robbie Davidson off the bowling of Dante Niles for twenty-five runs from just twenty-four balls which included three (4’s).

Adil Ali was the next player to arrive at the crease again joining Aziz Iqbal (wicketkeeper) as the new partnership looked to increase the visitors total. The duo were looking to build a decent partnership, whilst improve the visitors run rate as they looked to hit the ball to the boundary.

As the visitors started to add some runs to the scoreboard tensions started to rise on the pitch and they hit boiling point as Robbie Davidson stood in the way of the batsman, whilst they were running between the wickets. Aziz Iqbal took issue with Davidson’s position and bumped into the keeper before completing the run, this lead to the players having a few words as they went eye to eye in the middle.

As both umpires came to the middle to claim the situation down, the lead umpire went over to speak with Will Davidson (Captain) before going over to the crease to speak with Aziz Iqbal and warning both players about their conduct before allowing the match to continue. Moments later Aziz Iqbal tried to hit another big boundary and was caught by Archie Phillipson for twenty-nine runs off thirty-nine deliveries which included one (4) and left the visitors 91-3.

Rashid was next to the crease for the visitors but he failed to make an impact when he was clean bowled by Dante Niles for two runs after facing just 3 balls. He quickly followed by Matthew Cavanagh who also made two runs from four balls before he was dismissed bowled by Ashen Silva leaving the visitors 111-5.

The final wicket of the innings was Rizwan Tariq who was run out by Tom Davidson off the bowling of Ashton Silva having scored just four runs off four balls. This left two batsman unbeaten Adil Ali on fifty-eight runs from thirty-five balls which included seven (4’s) and Three (6’s), whilst Shaukat Sheraz was not out at the other as he didn’t face a single ball, leaving the visitors 144-6 off their twenty overs.

Settle Cricket Club came out to bat looking to 145 runs for a place in the quarter-finals of the 20/20 competition. Will & Robbie Davidson opened the batting for the home side as the weather took a turn for the worst and the rain started to come down heavily. The duo made an opening partnership of fifty runs which came quickly as captain Will Davidson looked to get runs on the board before rain stopped play.

But as the rain slowed and stopped the visitors took their first wicket as Will Davidson was caught by Nomi Akhtar off the bowling of Jonathan Beech for thirty-four runs from just seventeen deliveries, which included six (4’s) and a strike rate of 200%. Unfortunately for the visitors that brough club professional Ashen Silva to the crease and alongside Robbie Davidson the pair moved the total over one hundred runs with the second fifty partnership of the match.

Ashen Silva was the next wicket to fall, caught by Adil Ali off the bowling of Sajid for forty runs which came of thirty-three balls and included seven (4’s) and took the home side onto 118-2. Tom Davidson then made a quick fire eight runs from six balls, before James Snowden scored a single off three deliveries leaving Settle on 143-4. It was left for Robbie Davidson to hit the winning runs leaving himself not out on thirty-five runs from forty balls, whilst at the other end Dante Niles was not out on zero having not faced a ball.

Settle Cricket Club won the match by six wickets and will now face Feniscowles Cricket Club at the Marshfield ground in the quarter-finals of the Ribblesdale League 20/20 competition on the 8th July 2022.
