Former Clarets Junior Charged With Trafford Rape

John Cofie Appears In Court Under Rape Charges of A Women In Manchester

A former Burnley Football Club academy player who was tipped for the Premier League has appeared in court accused and charged of rape. John Cofie began his football career as a junior in Burnley and after the Clarets rejected a £250,000 bid from Liverpool for Cofie in November 2007, he refused to return to training with the club. After further interest from Chelsea, Cofie was signed by Manchester United manager Sir Alex Ferguson for £1M at the age of fourteen in November 2007.

John Cofie, now aged thirty appeared in court on the 23rd January 2023, where it was alleged he had raped a woman in Trafford, Greater Manchester, in 2019. Cofie and his co defendant Nathan Stuart both denied the charges against them at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

Despite Sir Alex Ferguson thinking he had star potential, Cofie never made a full senior appearance for Manchester United, spending lengthy periods on loan at clubs including Sheffield United and Royal Antwerp. After being released from Manchester United, Cofie had spells at Barnsley, Crawley Town, Wrexham and Chorley before retiring from football at the age of twenty-seven.

Cofie, a Ghanaian footballer born in Germany, was spotted playing at a youth tournament in Germany by scouts from Turf Moor, who brought him to the Lancashire club at the age of fourteen. Cofie now works as a football coach at a school in Lancashire.
