Clarets Make Fifth Transfer Window Signing

Deji Sotona Joins Clarets From OGC Nice On Free Transfer

Burnley Football Club have this morning confirmed the signing of striker Deji Sotona from French Ligue 1side OGC Nice on a free transfer. Sotona has recently returned to OGC Nice after a loan spell with Brentford B and Kilmarnock in the Scottish Premier League this season.

The former Manchester United player spent four years at Carrington, working his way up the ranks and even training with the first team. Remarkably, at sixteen he was named the fastest player at the club, clocking a speed of 22.9 mph to beat Marcus Rashford and Diogo Dalot to the top of the timesheets.

Manchester United offered Sotona a three-year contract extension after his stint with the first team but he rejected the offer and instead became a free agent in 2020. Former Nice manager Patrick Vieira then personally reached out to Sotona to lure him to the French outfit, promising the youngster some first team opportunities. Sotona joined Nice after his Manchester United contract expired, but Vieira was sacked shortly after and game time became hard to come by for the young striker.

A Republic of Ireland youth international will initial join the Clarets U21 squad working along side Tony Philliskirk, Andy Farrell and Ross Wallace as he looks to gain some more experience before looking to get into Vincent Kompany’s first team squad.
