Guiseley AFC 0 v 1 Doncaster Rovers (Pre-Season friendly)
Darren Ferguson brought his Doncaster Rovers side to Nethermoor Park this afternoon as Adam Lockwood side entertained another Yorkshire rival the fourth of this pre-season campaign. Lockwood has had a busy week off the field making five new signings in Callum McFadzean, Connor Brown, George Gomersall, Scott Smith and Kayode Odejayi.
Guiseley made a bright start to the game and held their own against a strong League One side in Doncaster Rovers. Reece Thompson made some excellent runs in the opening ten minutes and was a boot’s width away from score off a wayward back pass which was clawed away for a corner by the visiting goalkeeper.
Despite the positive start it was again the visitors who took the lead against the run of play following an error by goalkeeper Jonny Maxted who parried a shot into the path of Liam Mandeville, he rounded the keeper on the six yard box and slotted the ball home.
The lively Thompson continued to pressure the Doncaster defence and had another shot blocked in the twenty-fifth minute. Then five minutes later he was a whisker away from converting a cross as the home side ramped up the pressure looking for the equaliser.
As the half drew to a close the game turned into a bit of a midfield battle with neither side having any clear-cut changes. Adam Lockwood would have been the happier of the two managers at half-time, as his side matched the Sky Bet League One side in all departments and only trailed to the visitors because of an individual error.
The visitors started the second half the stronger of the two sides and quickly fizzed two shots across the face of goal with Maxted well beaten. The first effort was dragged across goal and wide of the far post. Then a minute later the second effort went high over the angle as Rovers upped the ante after the restart.
Guiseley started to take control of the game on the hour mark as they kept the ball and created a number of excellent efforts at the Doncaster goal. Both Jon Rooney and Callum McFadzean had chances to bring the score level, Rooney’s snapshot went just wide whilst McFadzeam was punched away for a corner.
Callum McFadzean almost got on the end of another free-kick late in the game, but the Rovers defence made a last gasp headed clearance. The final ten minutes were fairly even with neither side making any chances as the game ended 1-0 to Doncaster Rovers.
Adam Lockwood will now take his side to face Handsworth Parramore in Worksop on Tuesday evening in their final away pre-season friendly of the season.
